Production of Antibiotic Substances, Vibriocins, by Vibrio Cholerae Biotype El Tor

Abstract
Twenty-nine strains of Vibrio cholowe No type el for isolated from the cholera epidemic in Korea On September, 1969 were subjected to study on the production of vibriocin, employing ultraviolet-irradiated induction method.
Two strains of twenty-nine isolates tested were found to be vibriocin producers. The vibriocins, inhibited all of the seven indicator strains, received from K. L. Vos-ti, indicating the vibriocins exert a relatively wide range of antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli.
All two strains of vibriocinogenic vibrios were found to be inhibited by colicinogenic strains of Escherichia coli recently isolated from healthy persons and patients; one of the vibriocinogenic strains worm was inhibited by three kinds of colicin type (colicin B, E2, and unclassified) and other (HAVC-29) by one kind of colicin type (unclassified type). In other words, four strains among forty-one colicinogenic Escherichia coli inhibited two strains of vibriocinogenic vibrios.
Vibriocinogeny was briefly discussed in relation to pathogenesis of cholera.
